Gelingdalur volcano
Iceland, 2021
The Gelingdalur volcano, erupted from March 19, 2021 to September 18, 2021. At the time of this photograph on May 5, it took about one-and-half hours of medium-strenuous hiking to get to this vantage point, a slope about 200 yards from the fissure cone. On that day, the fissure would explode for about 2 minutes out of every 10. The fountain pictured here is about 300 feet high according to data from Icelandic monitoring. Some of the largest fountains sent tephra (volcanic glass) the size of peas raining down on us. Fun times.
